Sophie Anderson was a genre, landscape and portrait painter. She was born in Paris, where she studied under Steuben.Her father being French, her early years were spent in France, but with the outbreak of the 1848 Revolution, she and her family left for America. There she established herself as a successful portrait painter and married an English artist, Walter Anderson. In 1854 they came to England, and in 1855 she began to exhibit genre pictures at the Royal Academy.Whilst in England she lived in London, Dalston (Cumberland), and Bramley near Guildford, but around 1871 she moved to Capri because of ill health. Eventually she returned to England and lived in Falmouth.Anderson is extremely well known for her canvas titled “No Walk Today”.She exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1855 and 1896 also exhibiting at the British Institution, Suffolk Street and the Grosvenor Gallery.
