Gross domestic product in the U.S. increased by more than previously estimated in the fourth quarter of 2016, according to a report released by the Commerce Department on Thursday. The report said real GDP climbed by 2.1 percent in the fourth quarter compared to the previously reported 1.9 percent increase.

While the Labor Department released a report on Thursday showing a modest drop in first-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits in the week ended March 25th, claims still came in above economist estimates. The report said initial jobless claims edged down to 258,000, a decrease of 3,000 from the previous week's revised level of 261,000.
