First-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits fell by much more than expected in the week ended April 5th, according to a report released by the Labor Department on Thursday, with jobless claims falling to their lowest level in almost seven years. The report said initial jobless claims dropped to 300,000, a decrease of 32,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 332,000.

The report showed that the preliminary reading on the consumer sentiment index for April came in at 82.6 compared to the final March reading of 80.0.
