    Reflecting a less favorable assessment of current business and labor market conditions, the Conference Board released a report on Tuesday showing a modest deterioration in U.S. consumer confidence in the month of April. The Conference Board said its consumer confidence index dipped to 82.3 in April from an upwardly revised 83.9 in March.

    U.S. Weekly Jobless Claims Unexpectedly Climb To 344,000

    Offsetting some of the optimism about the labor market generated by yesterday's ADP report, the Labor Department released a report on Thursday showing an unexpected increase in initial jobless claims in the week ended April 26th. The report said initial jobless claims climbed to 344,000, an increase of 14,000 from the previous week's revised level of 330,000.

    U.S. Construction Spending Edges Up 0.2% In March, Less Than Expected

    With a drop in spending on public construction partly offsetting an increase in spending on private construction, the Commerce Department released a report on Thursday showing that U.S. construction spending rose by less than expected in the month of March. The report said construction spending rose by 0.2 percent to an annual rate of $942.5 billion in March.

    U.S. Manufacturing Index Reaches Highest Level This Year

    Partly reflecting a faster rate of job growth in the sector, the Institute for Supply Management released a report on Thursday showing that its index of U.S. manufacturing activity rose by more than expected in the month of April. The ISM said its purchasing managers index climbed to 54.9 in April from 53.7 in March, with a reading above 50 indicating growth in the manufacturing sector.

    U.S. Job Growth Far Exceeds Economist Estimates In April

    Employment in the U.S. rose by much more than anticipated in the month of April, according to a report released by the Labor Department on Friday, with the report also showing a much bigger than expected drop in the unemployment rate. The Labor Department said non-farm payroll employment surged up by 288,000 jobs in April compared to economist estimates for an increase of about 218,000 jobs.

    U.S. Labor Productivity Falls 1.7% In Q1 As Weather Impacts Output

    Labor productivity in the U.S. fell by more than anticipated in the first quarter of 2014, according to a report released by the Labor Department on Wednesday. The Labor Department said productivity fell by 1.7 percent in the first quarter following a revised 2.3 percent increase in the fourth quarter. Economists had been expecting productivity to drop by about 1.2 percent.
