US oil prices rise

The price of U.S. oil was up nearly 1 percent Tuesday along with a rising stock market.

Global crude slipped, though, on the prospect of rising supplies from Libya, the North Sea, and Iran.

Benchmark U.S. oil for February delivery rose 70 cents to $92.50 a barrel in early afternoon trading in New York.

Brent crude, used to set prices for international varieties of crude used by many U.S. refineries, fell 41 cents to $105.56 in London.

"The overall outlook for oil pricing has taken on an increasingly mixed look with the two main crude benchmarks responding to differing influences," wrote energy analyst Jim Ritterbusch in a report Tuesday.

Citigroup forex trader fired amid global probe

At least 12 foreign exchange traders at global banks have been suspended amid probes into possible manipulation and collusion in foreign exchange markets, where $5.3tn is traded every day. None of these traders has been accused of wrongdoing.

UK, Swiss and US authorities, with the help of regulators in Hong Kong, are investigating at least 15 banks including Barclays, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, Royal Bank of Scotland, Standard Chartered and UBS. Internal reviews are also under way. No charges have been brought by authorities.

Senator Pushing ‘Emergency’ Bill To Make Oral Sex A Felony

Apparently, there’s an emergency in the great state of Virginia. High school students are having too much oral and anal sex, and it’s time to start throwing them in prison for it — making them felons for the rest of their lives.

So says Virginia Republican state senatorThomas A. Garrett, who was unsurprisingly endorsed by failed former Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli.

Garrett is attempting to resurrect Virginia’s “crimes against nature” statute. Cuccinelli, as Virginia’s AG, tried to convince the U.S. Supreme Court that the law was both necessary or constitutional. He failed.

Despite an outpouring of important economic indicators and event risk releases this week, foreign exchange (forex) market prices remain relatively contained, leaving investors unable to find firm footing. Gold ends steady, silver remains weak on reduced offtake

Gold prices ruled steady at Rs 30,360 per ten grams in the national capital today on restricted buying at prevailing higher levels.

However, silver extended its weakness for the second straight day and lost Rs 90 to Rs 45,230 per kg on reduced offtake by industrial units and coin makers.

In Mumbai, Gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity were traded at Rs 30,000 and Rs 29,850 per ten grams, respectively, while silver enquired at Rs 45,500 per kg.

Turkey’s Silver Imports Surge to Most Since 1999 as Prices Slide

Turkey’s silver imports climbed in December to the highest since at least 1999 and inbound shipments of gold rose to the most since July as the metals capped their biggest annual decline in more than three decades.

Imports of silver gained to 41.6 metric tons last month, 36 percent more than in November and above September’s amount of 39.9 tons, according to data on the Istanbul Gold Exchange’s website going back to 1999. That took the full year figure to 227.8 tons, 60 percent more than 2012 and compared with 42.1 tons in all of 2011. Gold imports increased 64 percent in December to 31.6 tons, the data show.

Stocks open higher on second day of trading

Stocks opened higher Friday in the second day of trading as automakers released some strong year-end sales results.

The Dow Jones industrial average index rose 55 points to 16,496 at the opening bell. The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 5 points to 1,837 and the Nasdaq composite index added 5 points to 4,152.

Chrysler's U.S. sales rose 6% in the final month of the year, the company said Friday. Industry analysts expect a total U.S. sales gain of about 4% in December and an annual gain of around 8%. All automakers are releasing sales numbers.
