Looking For Volatility? Watch $Cad After Canadian CPI

Two opposite themes stood out on the FX market yesterday during the NA session:


- A much lower U.S. dollar, helped by low U.S. yields and the original Euro$ rally from the strong Euro-zone PMI numbers. The massive drop in U.S. stocks also helped crush the U.S. dollar against the yen as the carry trade faded.

- Commodity currencies did NOT follow the U.S. Dollar drop and actually went the other way. It all started with China’s weak numbers in the overnight. Ironically, most commodities traded strongly, especially precious metals and oil.

IEA Warns U.S. Oil Output Growth Could Hit a Wall

Surging U.S. oil production could hit a wall in the coming years if the country maintains its ban on crude exports, the International Energy Agency said.

Turkish lira hits record low vs. stronger dollar

The Turkish lira fell to a record low against the broadly stronger dollar on Thursday as the improving outlook for the U.S. economy sparked a renewed selloff in the currency.

USD/TRY rose to highs of 2.2118 and was last up 0.85% to 2.2098.

Elsewhere, the euro was close to record highs against the lira, with EUR/TRY advancing 0.87% to 3.0092, not far from the highs of 3.0156 reached on December 26.

Deutsche suspends trader suspected of forex rigging

Deutsche Bank has suspended at least one currency trader on suspicion of manipulating benchmark forex rates, a German paper reported.

German daily Die Welt, citing people familiar with the investigations, said the trader worked in New York and traded Argentine pesos.

US oil prices rise

The price of U.S. oil was up nearly 1 percent Tuesday along with a rising stock market.

Global crude slipped, though, on the prospect of rising supplies from Libya, the North Sea, and Iran.

Benchmark U.S. oil for February delivery rose 70 cents to $92.50 a barrel in early afternoon trading in New York.

Brent crude, used to set prices for international varieties of crude used by many U.S. refineries, fell 41 cents to $105.56 in London.

"The overall outlook for oil pricing has taken on an increasingly mixed look with the two main crude benchmarks responding to differing influences," wrote energy analyst Jim Ritterbusch in a report Tuesday.

Citigroup forex trader fired amid global probe

At least 12 foreign exchange traders at global banks have been suspended amid probes into possible manipulation and collusion in foreign exchange markets, where $5.3tn is traded every day. None of these traders has been accused of wrongdoing.

UK, Swiss and US authorities, with the help of regulators in Hong Kong, are investigating at least 15 banks including Barclays, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, Royal Bank of Scotland, Standard Chartered and UBS. Internal reviews are also under way. No charges have been brought by authorities.

Senator Pushing ‘Emergency’ Bill To Make Oral Sex A Felony

Apparently, there’s an emergency in the great state of Virginia. High school students are having too much oral and anal sex, and it’s time to start throwing them in prison for it — making them felons for the rest of their lives.

So says Virginia Republican state senatorThomas A. Garrett, who was unsurprisingly endorsed by failed former Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli.

Garrett is attempting to resurrect Virginia’s “crimes against nature” statute. Cuccinelli, as Virginia’s AG, tried to convince the U.S. Supreme Court that the law was both necessary or constitutional. He failed.

Forex Traders Eye BoE, ECB Meetings

Despite an outpouring of important economic indicators and event risk releases this week, foreign exchange (forex) market prices remain relatively contained, leaving investors unable to find firm footing. That scenario ought to change abruptly with this morning’s central bank show-and-tell revue. If the latest policies of the European Central Bank (ECB) and Bank of England (BoE) fail to have an impact, expect tomorrow’s nonfarm payrolls (NFP) report to spur fresh market movement with insight into how deep and wide we can expect the Federal Reserve taper to be. Yesterday, the Federal Open Market Committee’s (FOMC) minutes showed near unanimous agreement amongst the voting members to taper the Fed’s monthly bond purchases in measured steps.

Forex: Dollar, Equities Little Moved by Yellen Nomination for Fed Chair

The US Senate confirmed Janet Yellen’s nomination to lead the Federal Reserve when Chairman Bernanke’s term ends on January 31…but should that comfort over-exposed investors? Even those that are skeptical of the direct relationship between loose monetary policy and the robust optimism in US and global capital markets these past years cannot discount that the external support has buoyed risk trades to some degree. What happens when the recognition of that backstop’s limitations becomes the consensus? We may soon find out.
