A leading indicator of Australia's economic activity declined in August, suggesting that the economy may continue to lose momentum in the coming months, a report from Westpac and the Melbourne Institute showed Wednesday. After reporting a sharp jump in first-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits in the previous week, the Labor Department released a report on Thursday showing that initial jobless claims pulled back by less than expected in the week ended October 12th. The report said initial jobless claims fell to 358,000, a decrease of 15,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 373,000.
