    U.S. Consumer Sentiment Index Unexpectedly Upwardly Revised In July

    A report released by the University of Michigan on Friday showed consumer sentiment in the U.S. deteriorated by slightly less than initially estimated in the month of July. The report said the consumer sentiment index for July was upwardly revised to 93.4 from the preliminary reading of 93.1.

    Reflecting an increase in exports and a decrease in imports, the Commerce Department released a report on Friday showing that the U.S. trade deficit narrowed by more than expected in the month of June. The report said the trade deficit narrowed to $43.6 billion in June from $46.4 billion in May.

    First-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits unexpectedly edged higher in the week ended August 5th, according to a report released by the Labor Department on Thursday. The report said initial jobless claims crept up to 244,000.

    U.S. Consumer Sentiment Improves Much More Than Expected In August

    With consumer expectations showing a significant rebound, the University of Michigan released a report on Friday showing a much bigger than expected improvement in U.S. consumer sentiment in the month of August. The report said the preliminary reading on the consumer sentiment index for August jumped to 97.6.
