PC Game Performance Can Drop With Windows 11 22H2, Microsoft Warns

Back in September, Microsoft began to send the first big Windows 11 update of the year to users via a slow rollout. Dubbed 22H2, it is sort of like the Service Packs of yore, offering a ton of patches and new features. But despite its promise, it’s been a rocky launch as users began to report BSODs and issues with Nvidia GPUs. Now Microsoft is warning gamers about the update, saying it can cause “unexpected” performance in some games and gaming-related apps.

Microsoft Fixes Windows 11 22H2 Gaming Issues, Resumes Updates

It wouldn’t be a Windows update without some bugs, and indeed, there were some annoyances when Microsoft finally released the 22H2 update (formally the Windows 11 2022 Update). Among the issues was a possible drop in game performance, but gamers can rest easy: Microsoft has released a hotfix that takes care of the problem. After the release of version 22H2 in late September, gamers complained about spotty performance in some titles. Part of the issue stemmed from Nvidia GPU drivers, which the company solved with a quick update. However, Microsoft noted there were deeper problems in the update. “Affected games and apps are inadvertently enabling GPU performance debugging features not meant to be used by consumers,” it said at the time.

The AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX Is Much Smaller Than the RTX 4080

The last products to arrive in our end-of-year hardwarepalooza are the chiplet-based AMD Radeon 7900 series GPUs. The RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT will officially go on sale Tuesday, Dec. 13. Whether you’ll be able to buy one on launch day is another story. In advance of the launch, our colleagues at PCMag have provided a brief photo diary of just how small the GPUs are compared with Nvidia’s latest. We knew they weren’t exactly huge at the product launch, but seeing them side-by-side with the RTX 4080 is interesting. They look old-fashioned, which is weird to say about cutting-edge technology.

Samsung's SmartThings Station Is Ready for Your iOS Devices

Smart-home standard Matter promises to bring together all, or at least the majority, of our smart devices and the once-somewhat-exclusive ecosystems they use, but we haven't reached total unity just yet.
