Former Uber Employee Describes Workplace Sexism, Management Chaos

    Eric Risberg / AP O

n her first day at Uber after training, site reliability engineer Susan Fowler Rigetti said her new manager told her about his open marriage and tried to get her to have sex with him.

It was the first instance of what she described as "one very, very strange year at Uber" in a blog post on Sunday. Now an engineer with payment startup Stripe, Fowler reflected on what she described as a pattern of sexism as well as organizational chaos that prompted her and other women to leave.

"On my last day at Uber, I calculated the percentage of women who were still in the org," she wrote. "Out of over 150 engineers in the SRE teams, only 3% were women." She said when she joined this Uber team the number had been over 25%.

Dutch Golden Age shines through at the Louvre

The Louvre is going Dutch this spring with the reopening of its Northern European painting galleries and not one, but three exhibitions devoted to the art of Holland’s 17th-century Golden Age. A major survey, Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting, has been in the making for almost five years, says the curator Blaise Ducos. It is a co-production with the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, where the show will travel later this year. Twelve of Vermeer’s characteristically quiet domestic interiors will be presented among rowdier genre scenes by more than a dozen of his peers, including Gerrit Dou and Gerard ter Borch, Pieter de Hooch and Frans van Mieris.

Facebook Wants To Start Streaming Major League Baseball Games

Butch Dill / USA Today Sports

Facebook is in negotiations with the Major League Baseball League to possibly stream one game per week during the 2017 season. Reuters first reported the news. What teams, which games, and where on Facebook the livestream would appear remain unclear, and Facebook did not immediately respond to request for comment.

This isn't the first major deal for Facebook's sports partnerships division. The company recently struck a deal with Univision to live stream 46 Mexican soccer games with English commentary from Liga MX, a Mexican soccer league that has more viewers than the English Premier League. The Washington Post reports that executives at Univision cited the social network's massive reach as a factor that drew them in.

Italian Renaissance specialist Miguel Falomir chosen to head up Prado

The new director of the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid will be Miguel Falomir, the museums long-serving curator and current deputy director, according to Spanish press reports. The selection committee tasked with appointing a successor to the outgoing director of 15 years, Miguel Zugaza, voted unanimously for Falomir on 22 February. The trustees of the Prado are due to meet in mid-March to approve the decision, which must then be formalised by Spains Council of Ministers.

Snap Inc.ís Growth Is Pissing Off Its Neighbors

    Getty Images

You can pick out the Snap Inc. employees strolling through the company’s beachside Venice, California, neighborhood with relative ease. “Snapchatters,” as they refer to themselves, walk around Venice with company badges clipped to their pants, MacBooks in hand, and stylish sunglasses resting on their noses. And unlike many people in Venice, they wear shirts.

Snap's headquarters are in Venice Beach. The funky west Los Angeles hood has long been something akin to the Haight-Ashbury of Southern California, home to bodybuilders, artists, dropouts, and weirdos. It's the kind of place where you can buy pot more easily than a cheeseburger. But ahead of its massive IPO, as Snap has swelled to 1,859 employees scattered across the skate-friendly malecon and beyond, neighbors charge that it's disrupting not only messaging, but also a vital piece of Los Angeles.

Amazon Says Your Alexa Recordings Are Protected By The First Amendment

    Staff / Reuters

Amazon is turning to the First Amendment to support its refusal to give law enforcement recordings and responses captured by the Alexa voice assistant on an Amazon Echo speaker that may help police solve a murder case.

After James Bates was charged with murdering his colleague Victor Collins in Walmart's hometown of Bentonville, Arkansas in November 2015, police issued a search warrant for the contents of Bates' Echo speaker. But Amazon has fired back with a 90-page brief contending that the records Alexa collected are protected free speech. Forbes has reproduced the document in full.

How YouTube Serves As The Content Engine Of The Internet's Dark Side

    YouTube
David Seaman is the Pizzagate King of the Internet.

On Twitter, Seaman posts dozens of messages a day to his 66,000 followers, often about the secret cabal — including Rothschilds, Satanists, and the other nabobs of the New World Order — behind the nation’s best-known, super-duper-secret child sex ring under a DC pizza parlor.

But it’s on YouTube where he really goes to work. Since Nov. 4, four days before the election, Seaman has uploaded 136 videos, more than one a day. Of those, at least 42 are about Pizzagate. The videos, which tend to run about eight to fifteen minutes, typically consist of Seaman, a young, brown-haired man with glasses and a short beard, speaking directly into a camera in front of a white wall.

In the aftermath of the 2016 presidential election, the major social platforms, most notably Twitter, Facebook, and Reddit, have been forced to undergo painful, often public reckonings with the role they play in spreading bad information.

    )

As do a related breed of prolific political-correctness watchdogs like Paul Joseph Watson and Sargon of Akkad (real name: Carl Benjamin), whose videos focus on the supposed hypocrisies of modern liberal culture and the ways they leave Western democracy open to a hostile Islamic takeover. As do a related group of conspiratorial white-identity vloggers like Red Ice TV, which regularly hosts neo-Nazis in its videos.

We are all made of stars, part 3: from the Womenís March in Los Angeles back to Europe

Women’s March, Los Angeles, California, 21 January 2017

In Los Angeles, I remembered what was like to be in a liberal city. I realised that with the people I had met along the journey so far, I had to be careful about what I was saying to so as not to offend anyone.

We talked to a lot of the protesters who attended the march, and of course I related to most of them—but my vision of the US had changed. I could see how distant and disconnected these people were from the people I had met in the Southern states. We are fighting about a global ideology here, universal human rights. But can people care about the global when the local is in disarray?

To me, art and culture are the keys to social improvement. When I was walking with all those people in the Women’s March, I was thinking about that. What this country needs are serious links between the countryside and the cities. The local has got to be involved in the global and people are waiting for these bridges to be built. I believe that our journey could be such a bridge.

The Iconic Nokia Brick Phone Is Back

If you were around in the early 2000s, you probably remember this:

A total 126 million 3310s were sold since the phone's launch in September 2000.

    Well, it's back (kind of).

    Paul Hanna / Reuters

On Sunday — 17 years after the phone was first introduced — Nokia announced it would be reintroducing the 3310.
