To celebrate its reopening after a €22m facelift, the Hamburger Kunsthalle is hosting the first exhibition in Germany in decades to encompass Édouard Manet’s entire career. Manet: Painting the Gaze (27 May-4 September) assembles top works from international museums including the Musée d’Orsay and the Art Institute of Chicago, and hangs them as pairs as Manet did for his provocative exhibitions at the Paris Salon.
