The German painter Max Uth was born 1863 in Berlin and studied at the arts academy under Eugen Bracht. He continued his studies during journeys to Belgium, Dalmatia, Italy and Tyrol. In 1897 he opened a studio for female students, which was visited by Gertrud Berger (1870-1949), Laura Schaberg (ca. 1860-1935) and Sophie Wencke-Meinken (1874-1963).
