Early Results Suggest AMD’s Vega 56 Packs a Punch Against the GTX 1070

When AMD announced its upcoming RX Vega product family, most of the focus was on its upper-end SKUs amid speculation of how well they’d compete against the GTX 1080 and GTX 1080 Ti. Less discussed was how the more modest Vega 56 might compare with Nvidia’s GTX 1070. Now, early leaks from Tweaktown suggest this match-up might actually be the more potent of the two.

DeepMind AI Moves on from Board Games to StarCraft II

There is a long and storied history of machines beating humans at games we once dominated. There was Deep Blue beating humans at chess, then Watson winning Jeopardy!, and most recently, Google’s DeepMind AI branch created a computer that can win the deviously complex game Go. Now, DeepMind is moving on to its biggest challenge yet: StarCraft II. I wonder if it’ll go for the Zerg rush.

AMD’s Vega Arrives to Mixed Reviews, Modest Results

It’s been over two years since AMD last launched a high-end graphics card that could compete in the upper echelons of the GPU market. That gap is literally unprecedented in the modern era. Starting with the launch of the 3D Rage in April 1996, ATI/AMD have consistently churned out a new GPU every 12 to 18 months. Expectations for the company’s new Vega GPUs have been high, but reviews of the Vega 56 and Vega 64 aren’t nearly as strong as Team Red fans will have hoped for.

Battle.net is Back and Starcraft Remastered Has Gone Live

There’s a pair of announcements from Blizzard about their new version of Starcraft and a second name-swap. First, Starcraft Remastered is now officially available. This new version of the game is a faithful reproduction of the original as far as its playstyle and visual effects, but the original assets have been reimplemented in native 4K and the game now supports 16:9 aspect ratios, leaderboards, replays, ladder ranks, player profiles, and cloud saves. More significant changes, like offering universal autocasting across all units were not implemented, as Blizzard wanted to offer a version of the game identical to what became a worldwide sensation and practically a Korean religion back in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Hellblade is One Patch Away From Greatness on PS4

Historically, there has been a stigma associated with budget game releases. If there wasn’t enough confidence to charge full price, there was a good chance the game was a real stinker. Thankfully, that paradigm has changed completely, and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is an excellent example of what can be achieved in a half-price game with a smaller scope.

New Shenmue III Trailer Showcases Gorgeous Scenery, Grotesque Animation

Two years ago, Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki took to Sony’s stage at E3 and announced a third game in the Shenmue series. The Shenmue series had always been intended to run for four games but had prematurely died after Sega killed Dreamcast development. When Suzuki announced that the game would launch on Kickstarter, Shenmue fans immediately drove it into the stratosphere, setting a record for the fastest KS to break two million dollars (eight hours, 43 minutes). We haven’t seen much of the title since then, but a new teaser trailer has surfaced online. It’s… well, it’s really something.

Naughty Dog Delivers the Goods with Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

In the video game industry, few developers have earned the level of prestige that Naughty Dog enjoys. Not only does the team benefit from a reputation for making beloved characters and franchises, but their technical skills are beyond reproach. And with the release of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy this week, we’re being treated to yet another top-tier production hot on the heels of Uncharted 4.

AMD Clarifies Vega Price Structure, Working to Get More Card to Market

Last week, we covered rumors that AMD might be raising its GPU prices, as reported by a UK retailer. At the time, AMD wasn’t able to offer us any kind of public comment. Now, the company has made remarks on the future of its Vega products and what consumers should expect these cards to sell for, both now and in the future.

PCGamesN caught up with AMD’s Gerald Youngblood at Gamescom and asked him to comment on the company’s price strategy and availability. “Our SEPs, and the price tag that we announced is our full intention of where we would suggest the product be priced. Not just for launch, but ongoing.”

Will the Xbox One X Kick Off an Console-Buying Frenzy?

When Microsoft announced the Xbox One X earlier this year, it was immediately clear that the console would be substantially more powerful than the PlayStation 4 Pro. The console packs a number of features, including support for FreeSync, a Polaris-based GPU that’s substantially more powerful (and efficient) than the GPU in the original console. It’s marketed as 4K capable, including “native” 4K in some instances. The PS4 Pro demonstrated that a checker box rendering method could produce results very nearly as good as native 4K while requiring substantially less horsepower. Microsoft has announced more than 100 games will be upgraded to support the Xbox One X’s higher resolutions and HDR (though HDR is also available on the Xbox One S). Despite these improvements, there’s still a question as to whether or not the Xbox One S will sell very well.

Half-Life’s Lead Writer Shares Details on How Episode III Would Have Ended

It’s been just shy of a decade since Valve released Half Life 2: Episode 2. Gamers have slowly come to grips with the fact that Valve is never going to make a Half-Life 3, any more than it’s going to make a Left For Dead 3, or well, pretty much any other AAA game of note. Valve is a publisher, not a developer, and it’s focused on esports like DOTA 2. Not a great situation.

Marc Laidlaw, the former Valve employee who was responsible for writing Half-Life, has released a full synopsis of the plot using renamed characters to avoid any kind of copyright infringement — but a brave soul has taken his blog post, shuffled in the correct character names, and posted it online.
