Complex Picture for Intel’s Latest CPU
Attachment 36377
Intel dropped a lot of Ice Lake news today, including an embargo lift on performance data concerning the new CPU. ExtremeTech was not aware that Intel had held a testing event in which reporters from various sites were invited to benchmark Ice Lake under controlled conditions and did not include this data in our initial coverage earlier today. We have reached out to Intel to clarify the situation, given that we were on hand at Architecture Day last winter to report on the initial Ice Lake CPU architecture and have covered Intel’s foundry research and developments for the past eight years.
Now that we actually know what CPU performance factually looks like, we’ve got a much better basis for discussing it relative to Intel’s Whiskey Lake. Our sister site PCMag has done a thorough comparison of Ice Lake against Whiskey Lake, with the Core i7-8565U represented in multiple form factors and systems from different OEMs. That’s actually incredibly useful because it shows just how large the gap between laptops can be, and how important proper testing (and thermals) are.

Acer’s New Predator Triton 300 Is a Budget-Conscious Gaming Laptop
Attachment 36820
Most consumers buy laptops these days, but many gaming laptops might as well be desktops for how impractical they are to haul around. It’s understandable when gaming laptops have to cram in so many high-end components. However, Acer’s new Predator Triton 300 takes a different approach. This gaming laptop weighs just 5 pounds (2.3 kilograms) and has enough power to satisfy the average gamer.
While this could be aptly described as an “entry-level” gaming laptop, it’s significantly more powerful than your average mainstream notebook. The Triton 300 packs a 15.6-inch 1080p LCD with a 144Hz refresh rate. Whether or not you see all those extra frames in games will depend on what you play. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 video card isn’t going to set the world on fire, but it’s an able gaming GPU for a laptop.

Attachment 37298
With rumors of technology companies feeling the financial sting of the ongoing protests in Hong Kong, one key government landlord is giving a helping hand to startups.

Though the property is inaccessible by the territory's MTR underground system, it still attracts a keen set of companies happy to trade off the transportation headaches with the much lower rent.
Now rents are even lower. In a letter seen by ChinaTechNews.com today, a memo from Chief Corporate Development Officer Stella Kwan has been circulating to tenants of Cyberport with an important cost reduction message. Kwan says Cyberport will "grant a 50% concession on rental for a period of six months with effect from Oct 2019" to some of the lucky co-working and shared office space tenants at Cyberport.
