Drake Breaks the Beatles’ Record
On Monday, Drake officially broke the record for most the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 songs in a single year, passing the Beatles’ 1964 record in the process. October’s Very Own owned every single week this October, and hit this achievement two days away from his birthday on the 24th. Drake is the king of the pop world, and all before his 32nd year.
His success is impressive, but living through his record-setting year often feels like we’re surviving an endless Aubreygeddon. With every song and video, released in a constant stream, his undeniable voice and practiced headshot-ready smirk hangs over the industry like a phantom. It won’t always be this, but for now it feels like it will last forever. The bars are occasionally stale, the flows keep getting recycled, the albums suffer from some bloat. Nevertheless, Drake has never been bigger commercially.

Hear Noname Rap About Profit
https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-cont.../9930195az.jpg
Independent Chicago rapper Noname kicked off the new year by unveiling her first new song of 2019, “Song 31.” It’s also her first new music since releasing Room 25, named one of Rolling Stone‘s Best Hip-Hop Albums of 2018.
Over winsome, jazz-tipped melodies, the rapper poetically rhymes about the drive and need to make money and its adverse societal effects. “I sell pain for profit, not propaganda/ I know cancer’s origin linked to Santa/ I know Santa’s origins linked to money/ Mass production of cattle/ Slaughtering for the yummy,” she raps, before skillfully tying in the emotional costs paid to the prison system.

In the Court of the Crimson King
When Robert Fripp looked out from the stage of the Anfiteatro Romano in Pompei during a King Crimson show there in July 2018, he saw something he didn’t expect: women.
“Seeing men sitting next to their wives,” he marveled during a recent press event in London’s West End. “Seeing young men sitting next to their girlfriends. And a lot of old people, mainly male, too. But nevertheless, a lot of them were young, and a lot of them were women. This is astonishing.”
The day after the press conference, at his hotel room a few blocks away, the topic of audience makeup was very much on the guitarist’s mind as he sat down for a wide-ranging interview ahead of an enormous year for the band he’s led on and off for a half-century. King Crimson first rehearsed on January 13th, 1969, in the basement of a London café, just five miles southwest of where Fripp met with Rolling Stone. In honor of that anniversary, they’re reissuing their landmark ’69 debut, In the Court of the Crimson King, bringing their entire studio catalog to streaming services and playing more than 50 concerts around the world.

Rolling Stones Finally Give Back ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’
The Verve’s 1997 hit “Bitter Sweet Symphony” is one of the finest songs of the Britpop era, a classically Nineties expression of world-weary cool with just the right amount of English self-regard. It’s a song that only Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft could have written — except that he didn’t, according to a notorious copyright ruling. Ashcroft’s song famously sampled an orchestral cover of the Rolling Stones’ “The Last Time,” and a lawsuit from former Stones manager Allen Klein shortly after its release forced him to hand over 100 percent of the royalties from “Bitter Sweet Symphony” to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.
https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-cont...:600&width=900
This ruling has always been patently absurd — Jagger and Richards had nothing to do with the dreamy string section that Ashcroft sampled, nor with Ashcroft’s original lyrics and melody — but it’s stood for more than two decades, until now: The BBC reports that the Stones have voluntarily returned the songwriting credits for “Bitter Sweet Symphony” to their rightful owner.

Mick Jagger Talks Stones Tour
“I’m feeling pretty good,” Mick Jagger said in his first interview since heart surgery caused him to reschedule the Rolling Stones’ upcoming North American summer tour. On Toronto radio station Q107, Jagger said it’s been business as usual since his operation. “Been rehearsing a lot lately in the last few weeks … This morning [I did] a bit of gym. Nothing crazy. Then I go into rehearsal with the rest of the band.”
Attachment 35792
In those rehearsals, the band has been trying to come up with some surprises. “We’re trying to pick some ones we haven’t done in recent years, stuff we haven’t done before,” he said. “Most of the time people don’t want too much unusual. People like a little bit unusual. They don’t want 100 percent unusual.” Jagger added that “Memory Motel” is one of the rarities the band rehearsed a few days ago.”

Bob Dylan and Neil Young Duet
Bob Dylan and Neil Young wrapped up their co-headlining show at Kilkenny, Ireland’s Nowlan Park Sunday evening by performing “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” marking the first time the two have shared a stage since a show at New York’s Roseland Ballroom in 1994. Quality video has yet to surface, but Young posted a segment of the song on his Instagram page you can see right here.
Attachment 36158
Young, meanwhile, played the song with Willie Nelson four times between 1995 and 2018. The first time he did it, however, was the 1975 SNACK Benefit at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco. Sharing vocals with him was none other than Dylan. They had been admiring each other’s work for many years at that point, but it was the first time they’d ever played together. Whether or not they meant to mirror their first onstage encounter by playing the song again at Kilkenny is unclear.

A serene flute melody ushers in the track as the Migos rapper delivers his laidback rhymes. “I can’t get down/I gotta get up/Yeah, I’m in the pothole, whippin’ a knot ho,” he raps on the hook. “Make ’em go eat it up/Straight out the basement whippin’ Picasso/Young nigga heating up.”

Liverpool’s Strawberry Field

Strawberry Field, the Salvation Army children’s home in Liverpool near John Lennon’s childhood home that inspired the Beatles’ 1967 classic “Strawberry Fields Forever,” opened to the public for the first time Saturday.
The property – a popular tourist destination for Beatles fans that draws a reported 60,000 people a year – had been off-limits for decades, with the grounds walled off by a brick perimeter and a red metal gate.
However, starting today, the gates would open to the public permanently, with the Salvation Army converting the on-site building – which shuttered in 2005 after the original children’s home there was demolished in 1973 – into a visitors’ center focused on Lennon’s Liverpudlian youth.

Earth, Wind and Fire’s ‘September’
Do you remember? In the case of Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September,” it seems the answer is a resounding “yes.” The funk classic saw a massive spike in sales and streams over the weekend — enough for it to land at Number 73 on Wednesday’s daily Rolling Stone Top 100 Songs chart, which offers a preview of the chart that will be finalized next Monday.
The song, which was originally released in 1978, has seen an increase in both sales and streams throughout the month of September. But things got particularly heated on the 21st, the fateful night referenced by Maurice White in the song’s opening line. Early reports from Alpha Data, which supplies data for the RS Charts, indicate that fans cued up “September” to the tune of 2.5 million streams on Saturday alone, a 225 percent increase from the day prior. That figure includes over 885,000 on-demand audio streams. (Finalized numbers will be released on Monday’s charts.)

This Week In Latin Music
Maluma Welcomes Jennifer Lopez to the Stage at Madison Square Garden
Colombian pop star Maluma sold out Madison Square Garden for his second time ever on Friday night, during the New York City stop on his 11:11 world tour. But not long before his big concert, he was spotted on Jennifer Lopez’s Instagram, rehearsing lines alongside Lopez and Owen Wilson for their upcoming movie, Marry Me.
Lopez would later surprise Maluma fans at his Friday night show: dressed in a shimmering floor-length gown, she emerged onstage through a trap door, with a microphone in hand. Together she and Maluma regaled fans with a performance of her 1999 duet, “No Me Ames” — which originally co-starred Lopez’s ex-husband, Puerto Rican salsa king Marc Anthony. Sporting a classy gold blazer, Maluma went from reggaeton playboy to somber balladeer; but he regrettably stumbled over a few of Anthony’s lines, which Lopez tactfully recovered by singing them herself.

The Black Madonna and Las Vegas’ Intersect Festival
The Black Madonna has pulled out of her performance at Las Vegas’ Intersect Festival after the DJ learned of the music and tech fest’s connection to Amazon Web Services.

Two days later, the Black Madonna formally announced her exit from Intersect in a long statement where she criticized Amazon’s business practices and associations.
“I will not be performing at Intersect Festival due to their relationship with Amazon Web Services who have business ties with ICE and Homeland Security,” the Black Madonna wrote.

Metallica Inspires Name of Newly Discovered Deep-Sea Crustacean
Attachment 38528
A newly discovered deep-sea crustacean, a small worm-looking species that grows up to 6.5 millimeters, got its name from none other than Metallica.
That's right, the rock band was the inspiration behind Macrostylis metallicola, which inhabits the Clarion Clipperton Zone, a submarine region between Hawaii and Mexico. Drs. Torben Riehl and Bart De Smet discovered the species, and named it after the iconic rock band to honor the group, and also as a nod to the polymetallic nodules that make up the creatures’ habitat.
"We’ve played on all seven continents, made it into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and now… we’re a crustacean!," Metallica wrote alongside a rockin' sketch of the of the Macrostylis metallicola. "Not only did Dr. Riehn name his discovery after a band as he has been a fan since childhood, The Thing That Should Not Be has a few things in common with us," the post continued. "The worm-like creature dwells in complete darkness, has no eyes, and is colorless. Talk about Blackened! It also lives amongst metallic nodules containing cobalt, copper, manganese, nickel, and rare-earth elements. So it basically lives in a rock stadium? Now that’s one metal crustacean!"

"In concerts, and on shows like Jimmy Fallon, you have to perform a song in one take. So, for Dela Splash, I recorded (each song) straight through, maybe 12 times, then took the best from those recordings and comped them together. There's 'nuff learning and experimenting on this album because I'm stepping out of my comfort zone."

A guitar that Jimi Hendrix played in the early Sixties — when the guitar god was an R&B sideman and fledgling rocker based in New York City — sold at auction Saturday for $216,000, nearly four times its pre-auction estimate.
According to GWS Auctions, Hendrix began playing the Japanese sunburst electric guitar after he was discharged from the U.S. Army in 1962. “After leaving Fort Campbell Jimi moved to Clarksville, Tennessee for a short time where he played on the Chitlin’ Circuit with the likes of Wilson Pickett, Slim Harpo, Sam Cooke, Ike and Tina Turner and Jackie Wilson before moving to Harlem, New York in early 1964 where he stayed until late 1966 playing venues such as Cafe Wha and the Cheetah Club,” the auction house stated.

https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-cont...-Corps-Ltd.jpg
You just never get over some break-ups, and for fans across generations, the Beatles’ split in 1970 will always be one of the hardest-to-heal musical wounds. In the latest episode of Rolling Stone Music Now, Rob Sheffield — author of Rolling Stone’s September 2020 cover story on the Beatles’ last days — joins Brittany Spanos and host Brian Hiatt to talk about the many interlocking factors that led Paul, John, George, and Ringo to call it quits (no, you can’t just blame it all on Yoko Ono). Sheffield also previews Peter Jackson’s in-the-works Beatles documentary, which the Lord of the Rings director is assembling from the extensive footage shot for 1970’s Let It Be film. Plus, Ringo Starr chimes in with his impressions of what he’s seen so far of Jackson’s project: dramatically enhanced and restored footage of the Beatles rooftop performance.

ESPN to Replace Hank Williams Theme With Little Richard
The network is once again retiring the polarizing country star’s “Are you ready for some football?” theme song. When football season returns next week, Little Richard’s 1956 hit “Rip It Up” will introduce the game, according to The Washington Post.
The new intro music will feature Richard’s voice and a new musical arrangement by the Richmond, Virginia group Butcher Brown, which plays a variety of musical styles and features a multiracial lineup of musicians. The network will likely change the “Saturday night” reference in the lyrics to one about Monday night, and Butcher Brown will sing extra vocals, though the band would not confirm this to the paper. The group’s singer and multi-instrumentalist Tennishu told the paper that the new recording would be “beautiful” and that working around Richard’s vocals would be “almost a dream come true, because that’s basically what we spend our time doing.”

The staff told him that he had a call from a "third party," which turned out to be White's manager, because the White Stripes star heard about Grant's situation and asked his management to try to find him by ringing every guitar shop in the city.
"Incredible," Grant updated his GoFundMe page. "Jack White from The White Stripes got in touch this morning and decided to buy me a brand new guitar. Unbelievable. From one of the worst things to happen to one of the best. Once again, thank you for everyone's help."

Colombian rock star Juanes, Spanish singer-songwriter Natalia Jiménez and Dominican crooners Prince Royce and Leslie Grace performed three charming renditions to the show’s “living legends” Julio Iglesias, Roberto Carlos, and Juan Luis Guerra at the 2020 Latin Grammys.
Wearing a fluffy retro-like dress, Jiménez opened up with a homage of Julio Iglesias’ “Hey!,” delivering a passionate vibrato that matched hearts with the Spanish icon. Iglesias is known for his gut-wrenching romantic songs that rose to global prominence in the Sixties and Seventies, paving the way for the classic generation of romantic Latin-pop crooners of that era.
