Economic growth in the U.S. slowed by more than anticipated in the final three months of 2016, according to a report released by the Commerce Department on Friday. The Commerce Department said gross domestic product increased by 1.9 percent in the fourth quarter following a 3.5 percent jump in the third quarter.

Chicago Business Barometer Unexpectedly Drops To 50.3 In January
Chicago-area business activity was nearly flat in the month of January, according to a report released by MNI Indicators on Tuesday. MNI Indicators said its Chicago business barometer dropped to 50.3 in January from a revised 53.9 in December, hitting its lowest level since last May.

After reporting U.S. consumer confidence at a fifteen-year high in the previous month, the Conference Board released a report on Tuesday showing a drop in consumer confidence in the month of January. The Conference Board said its consumer confidence index fell to 111.8 in January from a revised 113.3 in December.

Reflecting a steep drop in spending on public construction, the Commerce Department released a report on Wednesday showing an unexpected pullback in U.S. construction spending in the month of December. The report said construction spending dipped by 0.2 percent to an annual rate of $1.182 trillion.

A report released by the Institute for Supply Management on Wednesday showed growth in the U.S. manufacturing sector accelerated to the fastest rate in over two years in the month of January. The ISM said its purchase managers index rose to 56.0 in January from a revised 54.5 in December.

U.S. Factory Orders Rebound More Than Expected In December
Reflecting a sharp increase in orders for non-durable goods, the Commerce Department released a report on Friday showing a bigger than expected rebound in new orders for U.S. manufactured goods in the month of December. The Commerce Department said factory orders surged up by 1.3 percent.
