Mary McCarthy wasn't sure she wanted to buy a condo in Old Town. While considering a change from renting to owning, she loved her apartment but remembers thinking, "What I want at 29 is probably not what I want at 35." But what was she sure wouldn't change? Her lifelong goal to be able to visit a lakeside town harboring nostalgic memories of family summer vacations. So, while sharing her Chicago rent with a roommate, she bought a three-bedroom place in 2012 in Duneland Beach, Ind.
"A lot of it is a dream fulfillment," said John Gajkowski, co-founder of the Oak Brook-based Money Managers Financial Group. "They've always wanted to have a lake home. They might have grown up with their parents or grandparents having a lake home."

Emerald Lake is located in Yoho National Park, British Columbia, Canada. It is the largest of Yoho's 61 lakes and ponds, as well as one of the park's premier tourist attractions. Emerald Lake Lodge, a high-end lodge perched on the edge of the lake, provides local accommodation. A 5.2 km (3.2 mi) hiking trail circuits the lake, the first half of which is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers. During the summer months, canoe rentals are available; in the winter, the lake is a popular cross country skiing destination.

Casey: A vacation interrupted by a hurricane
Twenty-five Bookbag Santa travelers from the Roanoke region had to be evacuated from the Caribbean fishing village of Placencia, Belize, under an advisory issued by the U.S. State Department related to Hurricane Earl, which struck Belize Aug. 4. Another hurricane flattened the town of 1,000 back in 2001.

“I grabbed two shirts and a clean pair of underpants, and put them in my backpack,” said Katie Letcher Lyle, an author and retired professor who lives in Lexington. She emailed me an account of her storm adventure last week.
“We were told to take with us just the bare necessities, stuff we couldn’t afford to lose, like our passports and electronics,” said Leslie Santapaul of Wirtz, another Bookbag Santa traveler. “Some of us wanted to stay. In hindsight, we would have been safe where we were. But the State Department wanted us to move.”
The evacuation was organized by the Sea Spray Hotel, where the travelers stayed, and Splash Dive Center, a vendor that handled adventure day trips for the group.

Scotland is the perfect place for a road trip. The scenic Braveheart country has thousands of lochs, misty hills and mountains, a famous sea monster and enough clan stories to keep you entertained for weeks. I joined a 3-day trip from Edinburgh that took me to Isle of Skye, Loch Ness, Glencoe and many other places in the Scottish Highlands.
