Twitter Says No, Hundreds Of Twitter Employees Are Not Reading Your DMs

    Via YouTube screenshot

On Monday, conservative activist and filmmaker James O'Keefe published video of Twitter engineers alleging the social network has hundreds of employees reading "everything you post online" — including direct messages.

But according to Twitter, these claims are factually incorrect and misleadingly portrayed by O'Keefe's media organization Project Veritas.

Nonprofits Are Bracing For Facebook's New News Feed

    Facebook

Facebook’s big News Feed changes — which will show you more posts from friends and family and fewer from public pages — won’t just decrease the reach of brands and publishers, they’re going to hit nonprofits, too.

Amazon’s cashier-less convenience store of the future is finally in the present. Over a year after it was announced and after a well-publicized delay, Amazon Go opened its doors to the public today, giving anyone in downtown Seattle access to 1,800 square feet of grocery staples including bread, milk, and cheese, as well as premade snacks and fresh meals. You just walk in, grab the items you want on the shelf, and walk out — Amazon automatically charges you for the items after you leave the store, and you get an electronic receipt for your purchases.

People With Less Time On Facebook, But Investors Are Still Backing

    Dado Ruvic / Reuters

Facebook's stock initially dropped on the news that people were spending 50 million fewer hours on the platform each day. But then the market showed it could stomach it.

In Facebook’s latest earnings release, posted Wednesday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg made a startling announcement. “Last quarter, we made changes to show fewer viral videos to make sure people's time is well spent,” he said at the top of the release. “That reduced time spent on Facebook by roughly 50 million hours every day.”

    The Latest "Bitcoin" Ploy?

The latest innovation in cryptocurrency ploys? Ginning up controversy by pretending your bitcoin ad was banned from the Super Bowl.

This week, AML Bitcoin, a company that purports to be creating an un-hackable digital currency that supposedly combats money laundering, manufactured a small outrage news cycle when it announced that the NFL and NBC rejected its Super Bowl advertisement for being "too political." The ad, which was posted on YouTube, depicted a caricature version of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un screaming at underlings as they tried and failed to hack AML Bitcoin's product.

He Predicted The 2016 Fake News Crisis

In mid-2016, Aviv Ovadya realized there was something fundamentally wrong with the internet — so wrong that he abandoned his work and sounded an alarm. A few weeks before the 2016 election, he presented his concerns to technologists in San Francisco’s Bay Area and warned of an impending crisis of misinformation in a presentation he titled “Infocalypse.”

Aviv Ovadya, San Francisco, Calif. Tuesday, February 1, 2018.

The web and the information ecosystem that had developed around it was wildly unhealthy, Ovadya argued. The incentives that governed its biggest platforms were calibrated to reward information that was often misleading and polarizing, or both. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Google prioritized clicks, shares, ads, and money over quality of information, and Ovadya couldn’t shake the feeling that it was all building toward something bad — a kind of critical threshold of addictive and toxic misinformation. The presentation was largely ignored by employees from the Big Tech platforms — including a few from Facebook who would later go on to drive the company’s NewsFeed integrity effort.

Instagram is telling people if someone screenshotted their story

This news has just ruined my life.

No shame in being a lurker. LIVE YOUR LIFE, lurkers. Own it. Be proud of it. Except, obviously, do it discreetly because no one wants other people to know when they're doing it. Look, we get it.

But now, in a test, Instagram is telling people if someone screenshotted their story.

    Facebook Wants More Quality News

    Asa Mathat

Facebook is rethinking its approach to news, and Monday the company made its clearest statement yet on where that process is heading. “We are, for the first time in the history of Facebook, taking a step to try to define what quality news looks like and give that a boost,” Facebook’s head of news partnerships Campbell Brown said in an interview at Recode’s Code Media conference.
