    Stephen Lam / Reuters

YouTube is adding more human moderators and increasing its machine learning in an attempt to curb its child exploitation problem, the company's CEO, Susan Wojcicki, said in a blog post on Monday evening.

The company plans to increase its content moderation workforce to more than 10,000 employees in 2018 in order to help screen videos and train the platform's machine learning algorithms to spot and remove problematic children's content. Sources familiar with YouTube's workforce numbers say this represents a 25% increase from where the company is today.
In the last two weeks, YouTube has removed hundreds of thousands of videos featuring children in disturbing and possibly exploitative situations, including being duct-taped to walls, mock-abducted, and even forced into washing machines. The company said it will employ the same approach it used this summer as it worked to eradicate violent extremist content from the platform.

Your Amazon Echo Can Now Wake You Up With Heavy Metal Every Morning

A study by Experian in 2016 shows that "setting an alarm" is one of the top five ways users use their Echo.
Now, if you have Spotify or Amazon Music, you can ask Alexa to wake you up with any song, artist station, radio/news station, playlist, or genre.

    Amazon

However, to ask for a specific song or playlist, you'll need Spotify Premium or Amazon Music through your Prime account or an Amazon Music Unlimited subscription. If you are not an Amazon Prime member ($99/year), Alexa will use Pandora, TuneIn, SiriusXM and iHeartRadio to play a station based on that song request.

Silicon Valley Is Turning Into Its Own Worst Fear

    Justin Metz for BuzzFeed News

This summer, Elon Musk spoke to the National Governors Association and told them that “AI is a fundamental risk to the existence of human civilization.” Doomsayers have been issuing similar warnings for some time, but never before have they commanded so much visibility. Musk isn’t necessarily worried about the rise of a malicious computer like Skynet from The Terminator. Speaking to Maureen Dowd for a Vanity Fair article published in April, Musk gave an example of an artificial intelligence that’s given the task of picking strawberries. It seems harmless enough, but as the AI redesigns itself to be more effective, it might decide that the best way to maximize its output would be to destroy civilization and convert the entire surface of the Earth into strawberry fields. Thus, in its pursuit of a seemingly innocuous goal, an AI could bring about the extinction of humanity purely as an unintended side effect.

Silicon Valley Punished Some Badly Behaved Men In 2017.

    Rose Wong for BuzzFeed News

As hard as it is to believe now, on Feb. 19, when Susan Fowler published a lengthy personal blog post about being discriminated against and harassed at Uber, it initially seemed like the company would be able to quickly address the allegations and move on.

    Mark Zuckerberg's 2018 Challenge

    Brian Snyder / Reuters

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday said his annual personal challenge this year will be tackling abuse, hate, foreign interference, and other major problems on Facebook. In essence: His 2018 will be dedicated to fixing a mess that might've been prevented with a little more foresight by the social giant. It’s a departure from previous challenges, many of which have been more lighthearted.

Last year was a doozy for Facebook. The company spent much of it on the defensive, explaining its bungled handling of fake news, graphic violent content, Russian interference in US elections on its platform, and its overall contribution to divisiveness and polarization around the globe. Facebook capped the year addressing early investor and employee concerns that it was "destroying how society works."

"Facebook has a lot of work to do — whether it's protecting our community from abuse and hate, defending against interference by nation states, or making sure that time spent on Facebook is time well spent," Zuckerberg said in a post announcing the challenge. "My personal challenge for 2018 is to focus on fixing these important issues."

    Justin Sullivan / Getty Images
