'Doctor Strange 2' New Trailer Brings Back Wanda's Children
https://www.cnet.com/a/img/resize/42...ebp&width=1092
Right on cue, Marvel dropped another Multiverse of Madness trailer on Wednesday to highlight that we're 30 days away from seeing Doctor Strange return to the big screen. With the Everly Brothers as our musical guides, the clip hints at a demented series of dreamscapes with foreboding real-world consequences. Or multiverse consequences, rather.
The trailer opens with darkness surrounding a disintegrating Sanctum Sanctorum and Christine walking down the aisle in a wedding dress. Strange is dreaming, while a distraught Scarlet Witch talks about her recurring nightmare about her missing sons. How many versions of Wanda Maximoff will we get to see? Battles through infinite universes are promised, and we also get a glimpse of a Doctor Strange variant whose open third eye will certainly make things interesting.

https://www.extremetech.com/wp-conte...ne-640x353.jpg
It’s easy to be dismissive of the increasing popularity of classic game remasters — after all, why create something new when you can sell something that already exists? That said, some of the most beloved games from previous generations deserve to be updated for modern hardware, and Max Payne is one of them. Rockstar Games and Remedy Entertainment have announced remakes of the first two games in the series: Max Payne and Max Payne: The Fall of Max Payne.

Why the Hell Is Elden Ring So Popular?
https://www.cnet.com/a/img/resize/b8...ebp&width=1092
For the last couple of months, I've been trying to figure out why everyone currently drawing breath in this cursed earthly realm can't stop playing, or talking about, Elden Ring.
It's a mystery. It makes no sense.
Elden Ring, a brutally challenging open world RPG, hasn't just been popular. The numbers have been astronomical.
Popularity was to be expected: From Software has released a number of hit titles. Dark Souls and Bloodborne have deservedly reached millions of players. But Elden Ring's level of success has put the famed developer into a whole other stratosphere.

How to catch Arceus
Before you can encounter Arceus in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl, you'll first need to have entered the Hall of Fame and obtained the National Pokedex in the remakes, as well as cleared all of the main story missions in the Pokemon Legends: Arceus game.
Once you've met those requirements, return to your bedroom in Twinleaf Town and obtain the Azure Flute. Take the item to Spear Pillar atop Mount Coronet and you'll trigger an encounter with Arceus.
How to catch Darkrai
To encounter Darkrai, you'll need to have the Member Card, which will be distributed via Mystery Gift between April 1 and April 30. Once you've obtained the Member Card, you'll gain access to the locked inn at Canalave City. Upon entering the inn, you'll travel to Newmoon Island, where you'll encounter Darkrai.

Apple Store Unionization Effort in Motion at New York Flagship Location
https://www.cnet.com/a/img/resize/2f...ebp&width=1092
A group of workers at Apple's flagship retail store in Manhattan has begun formally gathering signatures to form a union, The Washington Post reported Saturday. Organizers at Apple's Grand Central Terminal store say they voted Feb. 21 to affiliate with Workers United, the national labor union involved in recent efforts to unionize at Starbucks outlets, the paper reported.
If the organizers can collect enough signatures and then either bring about a successful union vote or prompt Apple to voluntarily recognize a union, the iPhone maker's Grand Central store would, the Post said, become the first of its retail outlets to unionize. At least three additional Apple stores are working toward forming unions, the Post said, citing anonymous employees.

T-Mobile's New Base Essentials Unlimited Plan Targets Those With One Or Two Lines

T-Mobile has a new unlimited plan coming this week that is cheaper than its other offerings. Just be prepared to drop some perks.
The new plan, called Base Essentials, launches on April 21 and runs $45 per month for a single line or a $15 savings compared to its current cheapest Essentials unlimited plan which is $60 per month. The new option is also $25 cheaper than the Magenta option and $40 less than a single line on its priciest Magenta Max offering.
With this plan, you'll get 20GB of high-speed data and access to T-Mobile's 5G network, but you will lose out on high-speed data after that allotment has been used up. Instead, your download speeds will slow to 1.5Mbps for the remainder of your billing cycle.

New Elden Ring Patch Buffs Weapons and Incantations
https://www.cnet.com/a/img/resize/ae...ebp&width=1092
Elden Ring developer FromSoftware on Tuesday released patch 1.04 for the game. Along with a slew of bug fixes, weapons and spell improvements, and balance changes, it also added a fitting ending to one beloved character.
In the latest update, Colossal weapons received much-needed attention, as the big two-handed weapons weren't up to par when compared with other weapon types. Some of the changes include increased damage, faster attack speeds and improved guard boost when blocking with the weapons.
Many incantations also saw improvements, from faster cast speeds, larger areas of effect, decreased recovery time and increased damage/effect. One incantation that was toned down was Swarm of Flies, which summoned a group of bloodflies to attack enemies. With the new update, the insects will do less blood damage, lowering the incantation's overall effectiveness.

Sony Plans to Sell Ads in PlayStation Games

There are few things you can do these days without being subjected to ads. Soon, playing console games will no longer be one of them.Sony is working with marketing partners to design in-game ads, according to sources for Business Insider. Similar to how free mobile games tend to display ads at the bottom of the screen (or, frustratingly, in between levels), Sony’s goal is to incentivize developers to create games that are free to play but still monetizable. Each ad placement will be available for sale in a private marketplace, where businesses will be able to purchase slots in a similar fashion to other forms of advertising.

Sony Finally Brings Variable Refresh Rate Gaming to The Playstation 5
https://www.extremetech.com/wp-conte...re-640x353.jpg
Sony’s console customers have been waiting patiently since the Playstation 5’s launch for the company to add support for variable refresh rate (VRR) gaming. Now, after a year and a half of waiting, the company has announced it will finally deliver on its promise. This week Sony wrote on its blog that it will be rolling out support for VRR this week for a collection of popular games.
In its blog the company didn’t specify how quickly the rollout would take place, or if it would start in certain regions. It simply noted it would be available globally in near future. Variable refresh rate gaming has been available on PC for many years now — ahem — and it allows the game’s refresh rate to change in sync with the display. Previously this wasn’t possible as most displays were set to run at 60Hz or even 30Hz.

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Review
https://www.cnet.com/a/img/resize/93...630&width=1200
The USS Enterprise is back and boldly returning to its original-series roots in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Beaming down to planets! Weird illnesses! Submarines in space! Shirts coming off!
Strange New Worlds premieres on Paramount Plus on May 5, with new episodes streaming every Thursday. Right from the off, it's a rollicking return to the traditional Trek that longtime fans may've missed in the recent wave of mold-breaking Star Trek shows like Discovery, Lower Decks, Prodigy and Picard. From its stirring new take on the original series theme tune and chunky bridge consoles to its square-jawed captain and weekly episodic adventures, the series is a playfully retro romp.
That said, Strange New Worlds takes the traditional Trek formula and stirs in more-modern elements, like deeper character backstories and overarching storylines. But that's far looser than in Discovery and Picard, which were powered almost entirely by ongoing plotlines.

AMD’s Upgraded RDNA2 GPUs Will Crank up The Power

The Sony Xperia 1 IV Has A 4K Display and An Actual Zoom Lens
Inside the svelte understated body of the new Sony Xperia 1 IV phone is a telephoto camera lens with tiny elements that can freely move back and forth to zoom in and out. No other phone can do this. Last year's Xperia 1 III had a similar lens, but those tiny lens elements were restricted to one of two positions. And as insanely innovative as the Xperia 1 III's dual-telephoto lens was, in use it didn't provide any real advantage over other phones like the Galaxy S22 Ultra that uses two separate telephoto cameras to achieve something similar.

RTX 4090 to Offer 24GB GDDR6X VRAM, RTX 4080, 4070 Detailed
https://www.extremetech.com/wp-conte...ag-640x360.png
The rumor mill is abuzz once again as Nvidia’s next-gen Ada Lovelace GPUs draw closer. Notable tipster @kopite7kimi is offering new details in the Twittersphere on what Nvidia has in store for gamers in the fall. This time around they’re shedding some new light on top three GPUs in the product stack, which will likely be the first to launch.
In a series of new tweets, @kopite7kimi details the specs for these upcoming GPUs. As has been reported previously, the flagship die will be AD102. Interestingly, the top-shelf “Lovelace” GPU will be outfitted with 24GB of GDDR6X running at 21Gb/s. This is the exact same configuration as the current RTX 3090 Ti. It should be noted that the previous generation Turing-based Titan RTX also had 24GB of GDDR6 memory. It seems that for now, this is as far as Nvidia wants to take memory allocation on its high-end SKUs. There were previous rumors that AD102 might come equipped with GDDR7 memory running at 24Gb/s, but those might be incorrect. What is seemingly firmer at this stage is the GPU’s Total Board Power (TBP). It’s once again listed as 600W, which seems like a given since Nvidia wants to push this card to the absolute maximum level of performance. It might have to in order to fend off AMD for this round.

Why Ron Gilbert is Going Back to Monkey Island
Attachment 45675
Imagine if Star Wars, instead of resolving the reveal that Darth Vader was Luke Skywalker's father, completely ignored it. Or, at best, made a few joke references to it and went about its business as if nothing really happened.
That would be crazy, right?
But that's sort of what happened with Monkey Island, the pirate-theme, cult point-and-click adventure series created by Lucasarts. After dropping two classic video games in 1991 and 1992, Lucasarts woudn't release another Monkey Island game until 1997. And when that game was released, it completely skimmed over the cliffhangers that took place in Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge. Including a reveal that the game's major bad guy, The Ghost Pirate LeChuck, was actually the protagonist Guybrush Threepwood's brother.
This happened, partly, because the game's creator, legendary game developer Ron Gilbert, left Lucasarts just a few short years after the release of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge. To continue the Star Wars analogy: Imagine George Lucas, after releasing Empire Strikes Back, decided to give up on Star Wars completely, leave it in the hands of a completely different group of people and do something completely different for the next two decades.

Nvidia RTX 4090 Specs Get Downgraded, Slated For July Arrival
https://www.extremetech.com/wp-conte...re-640x353.jpg
These days it seems like everything in the GPU world is beginning to fall back to earth. We all know prices have begun to reflect the impact of post-pandemic gravity. Also, several weeks ago AMD’s upcoming RDNA3’s specs were taken down a peg by the rumor mill. Now, it’s Nvidia’s turn in the barrel. Noted GPU rumor monger @kopite7kimi has released a “summary” of the AD102 die’s rumored specs, and they’re decidedly more sane than what they previously reported.
The biggest news, in our opinion, is the Total Board Power (TBP) has been significantly reduced. It was first reported to be an eye-popping 850W back in February. This naturally caused a lot of consternation as it’s totally unheard of for a consumer GPU. That number was dialed back a bit to 600W in April. This aligned with leaked PCI Express 5.0 specs that showed you could push that much power through a single GPU cable. Now the official rumor is the RTX 4090’s TBP is a much more palatable 450W. The reduction in power consumption is due to a downgrading of the total number of CUDA cores.

‘AMD Advantage’ Mobile Gaming Platform to Include ‘Smart’ Technologies
https://www.extremetech.com/wp-conte...-1-640x360.png
AMD announced a gaggle of new products and platforms at Computex this week. In addition to discussing its plans for the desktop AM5 platform, it also spent a considerable amount of time discussing its plans for notebooks. In addition to brandishing products for corporate and mainstream users, it also divulged a new platform for mobile gamers: AMD Advantage. This program is a set of features that are required for all notebooks to receive the AMD Advantage branding. They are all designed to maximize gaming performance, and they include a host of new “Smart” technologies.
AMD says its goal with AMD Advantage is to “raise the bar” for what people expect from a gaming notebook. The program includes three must-have features: fast displays with 100Hz+ refresh rates, 100fps gaming performance, and a nebulous “built to game” aspect to it. That last one seems to be a reference to the company’s new Smart technologies, of which there are five. Let’s discuss them one at a time.

Microsoft Was Going to Release a Game Streaming Dongle, But Now It’s Starting From Scratch
Microsoft is putting a lot of energy into promoting its Game Pass subscription services. While it’s not included in the base subscription, Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming (formerly xCloud) could be its big play for the future, but that future might be a little further off than we thought. Microsoft confirms it was working on a streaming dongle code-named Keystone, but it has decided to scrap that project and start over.
Microsoft’s Game Pass offerings are a bit convoluted, spanning both PC and Xbox with platform-specific subscriptions and an all-in sub that adds cloud gaming. That $15 per month Ultimate plan lets you download a selection of titles on your local gaming hardware (PC or Xbox), but you can also stream a subset of games to a browser, mobile device, Xbox, or PC. The addition of a streaming dongle a la the Chromecast to expand compatibility seems like an easy win, but Microsoft isn’t so sure.

Sony: We Are Going to Build So Very Many PlayStations 5s
https://www.extremetech.com/wp-conte...S5-640x360.jpg
After more than a year and a half, it’s still almost impossible to purchase a new game console for retail price. Sure, there’s supply if you don’t mind a 50-75 percent markup, but everyone should mind that. Thankfully, Sony might be riding to the rescue soon. The PlayStation 5 maker promises it’s going to ramp up production to unprecedented levels. We’ll believe it when we see it, but it’s still encouraging to hear.
In a briefing with investors, Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan pledged to increase supply of the consoles. It’s easy to see why investors would want that assurance. Sony only sold two million consoles in the first quarter of 2022, a significant decline from the previous quarter, but demand has not slumped. Sony says it can sell 80,000 PS5s in just 82 minutes, whereas it would have taken nine days to move than many PS4s at the 18-month mark. By not having more units, Sony is leaving a ton of money on the table.
Until Sony can boost production numbers, gamers may continue playing on older hardware. At this point in the PS4 era, there were just 36 million PS3 players. Currently, there are 84 million still using the PS4, and that number won’t sink much until you can swing by your local retailer (or Amazon listing) and buy the PS5 for the real price.

Rumors of Nvidia RTX 4000 Delays Are Getting Louder
https://www.extremetech.com/wp-conte...er-640x360.jpg
Many gamers spent the early phases of the pandemic trying and failing to get their hands on a decent video card, but the spike in crypto prices and intensifying component shortage made that almost impossible. Anyone who gave up and decided to wait for the next generation of GPUs is gearing up for another retail struggle as Nvidia’s RTX 4000 (Ada Lovelace) cards are on the horizon, but they might have to wait a little longer. The expected summer release date may not be happening after all.
Previously, all signs pointed to the first cards based on the new 5nm architecture debuting in midsummer, but the latest report from VideoCardz suggests that won’t happen. The new timeline may be shifted later, and you’ll have to wait longer to get the more affordable (and thus more popular) cards in the RTX 4000 lineup.
