Intel’s New Dual-Screen Honeycomb Glacier Laptop Prototype Drives Computex Buzz

One of the interesting things about Computex is that we get to see what sort of innovative ideas PC manufacturers are working on. Computex and CES are both often used to debut PC concepts that run the gamut from bizarre to brilliant, and while not every prototype makes it to market, some of these concepts do.

Intel’s Honeycomb Glacier is a dual-screen laptop that seems far more effective in that role than one might first think, based on hands-on reports from people at the show. The prototype has a 15.6-inch screen with a 12.3-inch half-height vertical display below it. The result is a pair of panels at different angles.

The prototype folds closed like an ordinary laptop, but the two screens are hinged to each other. The top screen tilts upwards, pulling the second screen into position. According to reviewers, the top screen then retains whatever angle you set it at.

    Apple iPhone folding phones

Apple is preparing to develop folding phones in a bid to compete with Samsung and Huawei, which have been competing for the device, according to technical reports.
The company filed a patent on a dual-screen and folding phone, flexibly, unlike devices that can be folded, such as the book only.

    Microsoft Unveils Project Scarlett Console

Microsoft announced the Xbox Next at E3 yesterday, and while we still don’t actually know what the next-generation system will be branded, we do finally know something about what kind of specs it will pack.

First, let’s touch on availability. Microsoft has specified that it expects to launch its next-generation console for holidays 2020, implying a November-December timeframe. That would roughly align with the Xbox One, which debuted on November 22, 2013. It also means the Xbox One won’t be quite as long-lived as its predecessor, despite receiving a major mid-cycle upgrade in the form of the Xbox One X. The Xbox 360 lasted eight years, from Nov 22, 2005 (there’s that date again) through to 2013.

    Kingston UV500 960GB 2.5-Inch SATA SSD Review

Kingston created its UV500 SSDs as a budget-friendly product line to combat the likes of Crucial’s BX500 and Mushkin’s Source SSDs. All of these products are intended as entry-level models and have been reviewed by our sister site PCMag. Using the data gathered by our fellow reviewers on that site, and up-to-date pricing information, let’s look at how the Kingston UV500 matches up against the competition and give our own insights about the drive.

    Dell UltraSharp U3219Q Review

Dell’s UltraSharp U3219Q 4K display serves as a single-monitor solution for those that need an extensive amount of desktop real estate for work or gaming purposes, or that need USB-C support. Although this monitor does have promising features, its high $1,099.00 price tag holds it back.

    Design

The UltraSharp U3219Q measures 32-inches diagonally and has a native resolution of 3840×2160. Compared with a multi-monitor setup, this one display would give you slightly more physical screen space than two 22-inch displays, and it would also have twice as many pixels on-screen when compared to two 1080p monitors. The combination of its high resolution and the large format makes it easier to work inside of multiple windows at the same time, as two or more windows can be placed side-by-side and remain legible.
If you need to use two separate computers, this system also supports a feature that allows you to show two video feeds on the screen at the same time.

Dell advertised that this monitor also has excellent color accuracy with support for 99 percent of the Adobe RGB color gamut and 95 percent coverage of the DCI-P3 gamut. In lab testing, our sister site PCMag found that this monitor fell short on both accounts, however, and the display they tested was able to achieve just 98.1 percent of the Adobe RGB color gamut and 73.4 percent of the DCI-P3 gamut. These results are rather poor, but the UltraSharp U3219Q is still superior to your average LCD in color accuracy and it’s perfectly suitable for mid-level professional image editing.

    Acer Nitro XV3 XV273K Review

Acer has taken an aggressive stance in the 4K 144Hz gaming display market this year with the Nitro XV3. This feature-rich display has an $899.99 MSRP, which undercuts competing products that predominantly list for over $1,000. Although the price and features of this display make it an exceedingly tempting solution for gamers, Acer had to cut a few corners to keep the price down and it may not be the best option for those who want a high-end display with all of the latest bells and whistles.

The high-end 27-inch IPS panel inside the dark enclosure supports a resolution of 3840×2160 and a fast 144Hz refresh rate. It also features G-Sync and FreeSync technology to prevent image tearing and ghosting.

The Nitro XV3 comes with support for HDR and it is rated to cover 90 percent of the DCI-P3 color spectrum. As tested by our sister site PCMag, the display is able to hit this mark right on the head, covering 90.8 percent of the DCI-P3 spectrum. It’s also able to replicate 85.7 percent of the AdobeRGB color gamut. For a gaming display, these results are excellent, and although the Nitro XV3’s color support isn’t quite good enough for professional-level image editing, it would still work well for that task on a consumer level.

Google: Stadia Isn’t ‘Netflix for Games’

Google held an AMA yesterday on its upcoming cloud gaming service, Stadia. Stadia is a unique project in gaming — there’s no other service quite like it available — but that particular facet is going to cut both ways. Users have had a lot of questions, and the Stadia team has now provided some answers to how various facets of the service will work.

One thing they made clear upfront: Stadia isn’t “Netflix for games.” Stadia director of product, Andrey Doronichev, writes:
Stadia Pro is not “Netflix for Games” like some people have mentioned, a closer comparison would be like Xbox Live Gold or Playstation Plus. The Pro subscribers get 4K/HDR streaming, 5.1 sound, exclusive discounts and access to some free games. Roughly one free game per month give or take. Starting with Destiny 2 (yay!).
This comparison isn’t very good either. Whether you like the idea of Stadia or not, what it offers — games that exist only in the cloud that you purchase at full price — is not the model that Microsoft, Sony, or any other company uses. The major companies that offer cloud streaming services also offer physical downloads for local play or they offer a Netflix-style streaming service with a large back catalog of titles.

Asus Unveils ROG Phone II With Snapdragon 855+

Asus has never been a major part of the smartphone world, but the company’s gaming-focused ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand attracted some attention last year with the original ROG Phone. Now, a follow up known as the ROG Phone II is on the way. It still has a funky design and a wealth of accessories, but it’s got a bigger battery and faster Snapdragon chip.

The Snapdragon 855 has a higher 2.96GHz maximum clock speed, and Asus says the ROG Phone II’s advanced cooling keeps the chip from throttling down under load. It actually has vents on the back that work this year — the original ROG Phone had purely decorative vents.

The Asus ROG Phone II sports a 6.59-inch 2340 x 1080 OLED display. That’s a slightly taller aspect ratio than the last ROG Phone, and the refresh rate has jumped from 90Hz to 120Hz — that’s the highest on any Android device. If the phone can keep up with that frame rate, the ROG Phone II’s interface will look incredibly smooth.

The new screen will undoubtedly use more power, but the ROG Phone II has juice to spare. The phone gets a 50 percent battery boost over the original with a 6,000mAh capacity. However, the phone is also much heavier at 240g versus 200g for the last version.

Asus equipped the phone with the standard USB Type-C port for charging, but there’s also a headphone jack. It also continued the ROG Phone tradition of adding a second USB-C port on the side. You can use this for charging while playing a game, or as a connector for the company’s accessories. Most of the accessories are a bit silly, but “gaming” phones tend to be like that. There’s the active cooling bracket, a desktop dock, and more. The phone also has ultrasonic shoulder buttons you can map to on-screen buttons in games.

Asus will start selling the ROG Phone II in China on July 23, and the international model will launch in early September. We don’t know the exact price yet, but Asus says it will be similar to the first-gen ROG Phone, which launched at $900.

    Origin Neuron (2019) Review

Origin’s Neuron desktops target the high-end of the boutique gaming computer market. These deceptive systems have a fairly plain appearance, but they come packed with the fastest CPUs and GPUs available and compete with the likes of MSI’s Trident X and Corsair’s One i160 gaming desktops. Although the Neuron is well made and offers excellent performance, its may tag may be a bit more than you bargained for.
